The inspiration behind the design was to create a digital sanctuary that reflects the hotel's brand identity. The Greek letter theta, with its island in the 'centre' surrounded by a circle, was the primary inspiration. This symbol, representing a place of sanctuary, was emulated in the use of white space, clear layout, and minimalistic approach. The colour palette was inspired by the classical Cretan painting of the Minoan Bull, where the hotel was built. The imagery used throughout the website imitates these features, creating a sense of tranquillity and serenity.
What sets The Theodore website apart from other hotel websites is its translation of design from its original identity. The shocking use of imagery, minimalistic approach, and unique colour palette are all part of what sets The Theodore apart. The clean user interface (UI) coupled with the easily navigated user experience (UX) ensure a pleasurable experience for consumers when looking to book a holiday.
The realization of the design began with conceptual designs for the identity. Research files were created in support of all conceptual assets. Once completed, thorough print and digital guidelines were created to ensure brand consistency in the web design. Wireframes were the start of the design process, enabling a holistic look at how the UX would integrate with the UI. The design was then developed to a point where it worked in harmony with the brand identity.
The website was designed to be fully responsive, working well over multiple screen sizes, tablets, and devices. It is a multiple page website, with clear navigation and text layout to provide a seamless user experience. The website, along with the hotel, was launched in July 2016.
Research for the website design was wide-ranged. The theta symbol was chosen as the circle represented the sun god Apollo and what he stood for as a Greek God: healing, sun, light. The island outline replaced the bar in the centre of the circle, providing the concept for 'sanctuary'; the idea the consumer is in The Theodore and surrounded by light and healing. This identity was then worked into the website design and experience.
The biggest challenge of this project was creating something that spoke to both locals of the island and newcomers while still retaining a similar effect on all who viewed the site. Staying true to the Greek roots yet not seeming like a cliché was a delicate balance to maintain. However, Enrico Pieri managed to create a design that paid homage to its origins, yet was still original in its presentation. The website is now the home for the online presence of The Theodore Boutique Hotel, a testament to Enrico Pieri's design prowess.
